I have played bass professionally in the Boston area since 1979. From 1981 through 1985 I performed with the Al Vega Trio six or seven nights each week, and from 1985 to 1989 worked regularly with the wonderful Mr Jelly Belly and his Classic Jazz and Blues Band. For too many reasons to mention, those gigs were unforgettable experiences! Some renowned musicians whom I was fortunate to work with and learn from during that time include Jerry Bergonzi, Ted Casher, Garrison Fewell, George Garzone, Bob Gullotti, Joe Hunt, Dick Johnson, Herb King, John Licata, Semenya McCord, John Medeski, Joe Mulholland, Chris Neville, Michael Shea, Stan Strickland, Tim Ray, Kenny Wenzel, Tony Zano and many others whose musicianship, artistry and humanity certainly deserve mention and recognition. They have my continued admiration and appreciation for all they have done. Some high points include performing with The Glenn Miller Orchestra, The Artie Shaw Band, and more recently New England Skyscraper, a free improvisation orchestra project under the direction of the amazing avant garde conductor Butch Morris. I’ve enjoyed the honor of performing on stage with legendary musicians such as John Abercrombie, Karl Berger, Roger Kellaway, Jim McNeely, Bob Moses, Dick Oatts, Kenny Werner and Phil Woods. Currently, I play as regularly as I can with some wonderful musicians in the area such as the legitimately legendary pianist and composer Joanne Brackeen (in her class at Berklee College of Music) Harvey Diamond, Garrison Fewell, Scott Goulding, Janine Graham, John Harrison, Charlie Jennison, Tony Lada, Joel Press, Gene Roma, Ray Santisi, Ben Schwendener, Johnny Souza, and the ‘unstoppable force-of-nature’ himself Al Vega (eighty-five years young!!). I have taught since 1989, first at Longy School of Music, subsequently at Walnut Hill School, currently at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and privately in my own studio. This work has included private lessons on double bass and electric bass guitar, jazz improvisation and theory, and orchestral technique. I have also organized and coached jazz ensembles, and taught a jazz theory class at Longy. As well, I developed a class, ’Practice, Practice-Techniques for Maximizing Musical Development’ which ran successfully at Longy. |
